Both of the Gears books seem to stand above the average novelized form of a videogame. Want to Read saving…. Traviss again brings the scarred population of Sera to life, focusing on the relationships between the Gears, Stranded, the isolated population of Vectes, and the remnants people of Gorasyna, former enemies of the CoG. The characters are very well Always felt that video game based books were a "hit-or-miss" that can either add a lot or very little to the narrative.

Sweep Follow Forum Posts: For a book standing squarely in the military sci-fi genre there's a severe shortage of actual action, no large Aspho Fields temnant battles, just some fairly routine skirmishes. Basically I love Karen's writing and will read the next Gears book because she writes brilliant characters, but I'd rather be reading her Wes Har books or her Republic Commando ones.
These books are very true the games which I find to be a very good thing as there is nothing like watching a film or playing a game after reading the book and thinking you have missed to much out.

With the games being all-action craziness, this book focusses more on the fallout from the big battles - taking place after the sinking of Jacinto and mainly concerning the relocation of the survivors, but also jumping back to the original hammer strikes and the toll that took on the people involved. The main theme of this book is that unity is the foundation of civilization, and without civilization, Humans become worse than animals.

But I heard so much good about the books that I bought Aspho Fields, was very suprised and bought this one for confirmation on wether I should keep going or not.
I'm invested in this and I'll buy the next one: The attacker reveals itself as a submarine controlled by Gorasnaya, one of the small "Indie" nations that had refused to submit to the COG after the Union of Independent Republics surrendered at the end of the Pendulum Wars.
Fairly good characterizations--many of these books based on someone else's characters don't seem to get them right, but Traviss does a pretty good job. The author's writing style involves primarily character conversions between each other. Jacints I appreciate that Gears is perhaps not the most story-driven of games and the novels, while terrible, do add insight into what the fuck is going on.
So I took it, not expecting very much. Occasionally, the story shifts to explore a past timeline of when the Locusts first emerged from underground jacijtos destroy humanity and how the decision came where the COG leaders proceeded to nuke their own cities in order to destroy any resources the Locust could attain.
Hoffman's decision to leave Fenix, a decorated war hero, to die in an abandoned prison, overrun with Locust, being the standout bump in the road. Jacinto Remnant focuses on the decisions leading up to the using of this doomsday weapons platform. Project Gutenberg 0 editions.

Mores and attitudes are very much to the fore within these books, with many of the characters, particularly Hoffman and Mataki, struggling to shift perspectives when society shifts to and from a war footing and to and from fighting a completely different and unfathomable monstrous species to fighting their own, sometimes hardly less monstrous and unfathomable.
To their surprise, they discover that the island, once called "Toxin Town" for the chemical weapons developed there and still technically quarantined, was pristine and inhabited by COG citizens.
